32-year-old woman refuses to help her sister with a house down payment, after her sister refuses to repay her a 5-year debt for wedding expenses, leading to fallout when sister insists it should've been a gift: 'Being unfair for holding it over my head'

There is nothing more special than the bond between sisters. She's the one person you'd most likely do anything for…even if that anything could get you into trouble! But hey, that's what sisters are for! However, as much as your sisters are there to support you through the highs and lows of life, is there a point when the giving runs out…?

This woman paid for her younger sister's whole wedding as neither she nor her husband could afford it then. And needless to say, it was no 'let's elope, courthouse ordeal' either! They agreed that the couple would pay her back for all the money she spent on their special day…but it's five years later and she has yet to see a cent. However, the 'who owes what' conversation was recently relit when her younger sister requested to borrow money for a down payment of their new home, which funnily equals around the same amount her sister spent on the wedding…As a sister, she agrees to help out, but only when she is paid back for the money she spent on the wedding. Fair deal? We certainly think so.

Instead of showing appreciation for all her older sister has done for her, this woman breaks down, claiming that the wedding payments should have been a ‘gift’ to the couple and not something that will be held over their heads for the rest of time…What part of agreeing to be refunded indicated that your sister will be paying for your wedding with no strings attached?

    I (32F) am still so frustrated over this, and honestly, I need some outside perspective. Five years ago, my sister (30F) got married and was struggling financially at the time.

  • FuriousMarshmallow NTA. She couldn't afford the wedding and she can't afford the house. It clearly wasn't a gift by virtue of the fact you kept bringing it up. She just thought if she wears you down, you'd give up. At least you won't lend her any money again. I'd also stop buying her birthday and Christmas presents and take it off the top of what she owes. Painstakingly.

  • NTA chibinoi If she can't afford the down payment, she can't afford the house. How will she pay for insurance, amongst other home costs? Will she expect you to pay for those ad well? Next time you loan money you want back, write up a contract with terms. Or if it's a large enough sum, small claims court?

  • Disastrous_Hyena_123 Never lend family money you can't afford to lose, they rarely pay it back unless you set up official documents and even then it's a struggle. Don't "lend" her any more money, it's not up to you to support her. If she can't afford the deposit then she needs to save for a few more years. Tell your parents, it's not your job to help her out, that's their problem as she's their daughter.

  • UnluckyCountry2784 NTA. I've been on your shoes and it was never paid back. Family feels entitled to your money esp if they're aware that you earn good. Continue to press her for payment. If she really won't pay you atleast you have a reason to refuse everytime she ask for money.
